New book shares grandparents' special role

FERNDALE, Mich. Aug. 13, 2007 – Parents and grandmas-to-be have a new book to add to their list of “must haves” as they prepare for a new child and grandchild.
Sharon Chess, Ferndale, Michigan grandma and business owner, recently published a children’s book that tells the story of a grandmother’s excitement and preparation for a new grandchild’s arrival.  The book came about when her daughter Erin came to announce her first pregnancy and said she couldn’t find a good “grandma” book.  Chess decided to take on the challenge.
Her story of the impending arrival of a precious grandchild is a beautifully illustrated book which is sure to resonate with expectant parents and grandparents and the grandchildren who love them.
Grandma’s Ready (Ferne Press) is written in both English and Spanish for readers of both languages to enjoy.
The book was reviewed by educational researcher Linda Leddick, Ph.D. who said, “Chess gives a sweet take on a universal feeling.  Expectant grandparents will see themselves in this book and toddlers will gain assurance of life-long, sustained love from their elders.”
Sharon Chess has shared many years of love and laughter with her three children and is now the grandmother of eight wonderful grandchildren.  After years of volunteering, Chess now spends most of her free time being a grandma.
The story is dedicated to her mom Fern Adair.
Chess feels grandparents have a special role in the family. “Grandparents should take every opportunity to bond with their grandchildren.  Grandparents are the strength of the family tree and their wisdom should be considered and valued.”
As her children grew up, Chess worked for school districts part time as a reading partner with elementary school kids and as a substitute teacher’s aid.  She also was head of the Parent Teacher Organization and volunteered in the school district to teach drug education and living skills to elementary school children. She was a Camp Counselor Volunteer for Camp Rainbear for four years for children with HIV and AIDS.  Chess currently is co-owner of Chess Roofing and Siding LLC in Ferndale, where she lives with her husband, Dave.

Chess will be signing copies Grandma's Ready at the Michigan State Fair Marketplace, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Check our Network page for additional book signings in September.
